Upload Documents
Add files to your AINexLayer Library knowledge base
Uploading documents builds the knowledge base the chat agent searches when you ask questions.
Ways to upload
- Library sidebar — open Documents, then Upload Files.
- Chat composer — open +, then Upload Files.
Both open the upload dialog. Choose one or more files and wait for processing.
What happens after upload
- The file is stored in your workspace.
- Text is extracted (and OCR applied when needed for images/scans).
- Content is chunked and indexed for retrieval.
- Status updates when the document is ready for chat.
Ask about a document only after processing finishes. Mentions (@ file name) are the most reliable way to target a specific file.
Common formats
See the full type table on Document Processing. Basics include PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown, spreadsheets, images, and audio.
If a file type is rejected, convert it to PDF or DOCX and try again.
Organizing documents
- Use New folder in the Documents panel to group related files.
- Prefer descriptive filenames so they are easy to find with
@. - Remove outdated files from the Library when they should no longer influence answers.
Importing from cloud drives
File sources such as Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox index selected files into the knowledge base. See External connectors for connect and import steps.
Connectors vs uploads
Uploads and cloud imports go into Documents. Live chat tools (for example Slack search) stay as Connectors — they are queried when you ask, not copied into the Library unless they are file-import sources.
Troubleshooting uploads
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Upload fails | Check size/format, try one file at a time, refresh and retry |
| Stuck processing | Wait for large files; refresh the Documents list; re-upload if status never completes |
| Chat ignores the file | Confirm processing finished; @ mention the document; ask a more specific question |
